I Ran

I Ran

I ran
With my short tige tige legs
And its springy steps
Like that of a tolotolo
I ran when my mother called
She called me in her husky voice
Like the reach of Yeye, the High Priestess in a coven
I ran
Past the reaching hands of miscreants, the agbayas we called uncle
Reaching for my small agbalumo breasts
I ran
But not fast enough
